I just bought Tom Lake and I’m so excited for it to arrive! After reading These Precious Days last year, I’m a committed Ann Patchett fan.

I’m jealous you get to read it for the first time! Hope you love it

I bought These Precious Days almost a year ago and it has sat unread on my bedside table (save for a couple of essays) which is not a reflection of the book at all but my terrible habit of never reading the books I buy! (I borrow a lot from the library and get motivated by deadline etc.) So I really need to read it. I just bought Tom Lake on Kindle for $5 ahead of a trip so I am excited to read that on holiday!

I hope you love both! Did you like the essays you’ve read so far? Tom Lake is a beaut, gentle holiday read.

Yes! The essay about not buying anything was a re-read (and a reminder that I don’t need to buy that much! The lip balm anecdote stays with me). Loved her essay about her three dads too

I don’t remember that first one! Further proof it’s time for a reread

It’s called ‘My Year of No Shopping’ 💖

Couldn’t agree more with Romantic Comedy! I think I’ve already read it three times this year

I always say: "When in doubt, read Elizabeth Strout." Oh, William! was one of my favourite reads of 2022 and I loved this article in the NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/03/books/elizabeth-strout-lucy-by-the-sea.html

If you haven't read Katehrine Heiny, I think you'd love Early Morning Riser x

I LOVED that NYT piece! Oh great rec - I have that downloaded on my kindle actually, and read/loved her short story collection Games and Rituals recently, so sounds very promising x

I've got her first novel - Standard Deviation - on my TBR pile. x

Standard Deviation is v enjoyable Jodi! I possibly like it even more than Early Morning Riser

I bought These Precious Days on your recommendation a while ago and am so excited to read. I’m going to add Oh William to the list too! I just started Beartown and I can already tell it’s cosy reading material (though a little more gruesome than others on this list) xx

Ooh I have not heard of Beartown, but I just looked it up and know of the author. I read Anxious People by him a while back and ... did not love. Tell me if I should read Beartown when you’re done.

READ THESE PRECIOUS DAYS. Dip in and out of it if you want! Read just the first essay and see what you think! It’s so special xxx
